Kohler Co. Medical and Personal
Services Building
The building is part of a 6,000 person manufacturing
complex in a community of historic
significance. The same Architect designed all three
structures in the 1920's with strong masonry forms used to relate
the new with the old.
A special mix of brick was ordered from the same
kiln in Massachusetts, which had fired the brick for
the original buildings. To keep the height of the
new structure below that of the surrounding
buildings, the interior spaces were programmed to
permit the first one and a half levels to be placed
below grade. Screen-like walls of glass were
designed to extend between the angular, masonry
masses.
To blend with the softness of the older
structures, the character of weathering steel was
selected for all fascias and a series of articulated
over-hangs.
