Scottsdale Visioning
Scottsdale AZ
During a two-year period, the citizens of
Scottsdale met to explore the future of their
community. The dialogue began with the question,
"How did we get to where we are now and can we agree
on that?" A sequence of questions led up to, "What
is our shared vision and how can we make it happen?"
The findings produced four "Dominant Themes"
identifying the City's special direction and
character. Specific "Vision Tasks" were outlined for
implementation by both the City and citizen
activities. Scottsdale Visioning is regarded to be
one of the most extensive, citizen-centered programs
of its kind. The Arizona Planning Association
honored the process with its Best Public
Information/Public Participation Award.
One of the early projects to result from the process
was the creation of satellite Citizens Service
Centers to be located in shopping malls, schools and
senior centers. The first Center to be established
received the International City-County Management
Association's Award for Excellence in Citizen
Involvement.
