Third Church of Christ,
Scientist
Tucson, AZ
9.5 acres
The Church presented an uncommonly clear set of
objectives, including these excerpts from a letter
of instruction to Bernard Maybeck concerning the
design of the celebrated First Church of Christ,
Scientist in Berkeley, California.
The 9.5 acre desert site was crossed with desert
washes. The ultimate design permitted all washes to
be left in their natural state. An irregular plan
shape was devised to translate the church's program
into idealized, light-filled spaces, including a
semicircular Sunday School wing and an angular
Sanctuary with three tiers of clerestory windows.
